If It's Saturday It Must Be About Religion

After three days of beautiful and majestic weather rain has arrived in Dublin, Ohio this Saturday morning. When I was young(er) I'd pray the rosary for the rain to stop so I could hit the golf course. Now I pray to be able to make it to the bathroom without having to stop and rest.

One of the drawbacks of the Panicdema is the demise of going to the local cinema. Her Majesty and I went every Friday then out with friends for dinner to discuss what we had seen. We haven't been to the movies in over two years and I haven't missed it.

What I never thought would happen did. I have not and might not see the latest Bond movie with Daniel Craig. I think we're required to say Sean Connery was the best Bond ever but, for me, it's like having to say George Washington was the best president. He was the first so he had to get it right. I mean, what if our first president had been Joe Biden? The main reason for not seeing the last James Bond movie is it lasted three hours and forty-five minutes. I could drive from Dublin to Champaign Illinois in that amount of time.

On our cable provider television channel this morning I switched to FXM. They feature films from the 50's and today I watched a religious movie titled, 'Demetrius and the Gladiators' starring Victor Mature and Susan Hayward. The title character had THE Robe used to cover Jesus after His crucifixion. Mature was captured by the Romans and forced to fight in the Coliseum. Long story short: he fell away from Christianity then through a series of circumstances came back to the faith. It's simple theme but it got me to thinking. We don't have religious movies, anymore. When I was in the 4th grade at Sacred Heart the entire school got out to go to the Rialto and watch The Ten Commandments. The list of religious films made in the 40's, 50's and early 60's is seemingly endless. These days the only time religious films are around is during the Easter season. I wonder why. Could it be Hollywood and the powers to be want to de-emphasize Jesus? Gee MJ, get a brain.

Here's a shocker for you youngsters. Can you imagine an Academy Award in 2022 being given to a woman who portrayed a saint in the Catholic Church? Well, it happened in 1943 when Jennifer Jones did a film called the 'Song of Bernadette'; the story of Our Lady of Lourdes in France who appeared before a young peasant girl.

Now I've got the itch. I might spend the day, a rainy one, watching films about the holy people. It's good for personal reflection.
