Oscar and Vieve along with their dad and Lizzie arrived at the lake yesterday afternoon. Frequently I worry about keeping the seven and five year old busy when they are here. Will they get easily bored? Should I rent a pony for the week? How 'bout I rent two Skeedoos instead of one? Of course, this is all silliness. Kids are easy. After they had settled in ol' MJ took them on an excursion. I showed them the two piles of animal feces in the back yard; one from a deer and the other from a bear. Vieve wanted to know why they looked different. "Well, because deer eat plants and bears eat honey", I said, knowing full well this was a fake out answer. Then the kids put on their swimsuits and played cannonball off the end of the dock. The discovery of differing shells took up a significant amount of time. You should listen to my explanations on the reasons for the different sizes and shapes. I think I saw Oscar give me a 'tsk-tsk' but Genevieve is still in the 'I believe anything Grandpa says' mode. We didn't find any pearls even though I'd convinced the children it was possible.
After dinner we went fishing, kind of. There's a spot on the lake just around the point from us. It has shoreline then three feet out it drops to fifteen feet. It's home to gazillions of pan fish. Vie caught a dreaded rock bass and a couple of other ones. Oscar snagged a baby, midget, little people perch. He didn't care. After awhile it's boredom time. It's easily known that when the worm is in the water and one of the kids starts putting the tip of the pole in the water and making figure eights it's time to head for home. We had a dozen worms in my container but split them in half to make them last longer. I don't think the kids noticed six of the 'whole ones' went into the lake accidentally on purpose. Anyway, an hour of fishing is long enough. So, that's it. The first day with the grandkids was over and we had a wonderful time. Plus, I saved a bunch on Skeedoos and a pony.
