If Protests Are Peaceful Why Do They Cost So Much

One of the focal points of in this country protesting is in Seattle. They mayor originally scoffed at the damage to her city and when the crowd took over a particular section of town she proclaimed it could be the 'Summer of Love'.

She changed her mind when the thugs came to her home. Portland is in worse condition. The 'peaceful protests' have been going on for 70 days and counting. Buildings are in flames and solid citizens have lost their businesses. Damage has run into the millions with no end in sight.

Since I don't live on the West Coast I'm not privy to the actual damage. But, I live twenty minutes from downtown Columbus, Ohio and we too have had our share of shenanigans.

In today's local paper there was an article on the amount of damage caused by the rioting, burning and looting. The total, give or take a few dollars, comes to one million dollars. In this day and age that may not seem like much but it does if one looks at the costs of each individual business. The Sheraton Columbus Hotel sustained over $200,00 in damage but that's no big deal because it's a part of the bad boy group and they can afford to sustain the loss, right? How about 89 and Pine jeans store? Damage came to $84,000; Slammers Pizza bar was $33,200. Winan's Chocolates, Coffees and Wines was $29,000. The businesses are small time ones. They are owned and run by small businessmen and businesswomen. They have home mortgages to pay. Some are raising children and need to put food on the table. They are regular joes.

Yet, the local government officials sanctioned the riots and looting and destroying of private property. Why?

It's a sad world in which we live when a small, very small minority of the population is allowed to destroy people's livlihoods.
