When I first go married and was teaching in the classroom of America's high schools I wanted to present myself to my students as one who spoke the English language correctly. When I was younger who cared if I said incorrect words or didn't use them in the proper context? Besides, all my buddies spoke the same as I. When one is trying to have a postive impact on youth it's important to make positive adjustments.
I used to look at Readers Digest. They always had a section on proper grammar and added thirty words to build your vocabulary each month.
One that I learned is the word regardless. Sounds simple, huh? Except every so often I'd hear folks say irregardless. Kids, there is no such word. It means the exact same as the first. Do not use the word irregardless. That's what Websters told us.
Well, in these changing times Websters lowered its standards. The word irregardless is now acceptable the same way Common Core allowed 2 + 2 ='s 5.
What a waste of my time and money buying Readers Digest. I'm still going to say regardless correctly and in my mind scoff at those who don't.
