Oppression In America

My best friend was an excellent high school basketball player out of Columbus, Georgia. His dad was career army. My buddy, as told to me, wanted to get as far away from home as possible. It's what some kids did when they grow up in a strict but loving home. He went to the Univ. of Detroit to play for Dick Vitale. It all worked out. After graduation he took a sales job doing what I don't know. Anyway, he was approached by an acquaintance to work for Anheuser-Busch. In time he became a regional sales manager. He retired at 55, not because he wished so but due to a company buy out. Today, he drives a Mercedes, travels whenever and wherever. His son went to Stanford and is now a financial expert with a company based in Dallas. When we talk about what's going on in the country he shakes his head in disgust. Did I mention his pigment is much darker than mine.

Some of you might say my pal was lucky; that he's one of the very few who escaped the system. Not so. This was his pattern for success: He earned his degree. He found a job. He got married and he and his wife had a child---------in that order.
