Moses created a monster when he came down from the Mount. It's a fact. Those two tablets screwed up our minds and we followers have been paying the price for a few thousand years.
When I was in the 2nd grade Sister Mary Calasanctus passed out books called The Baltimore Cathechism. It was at the age of six I then knew I was a sinner. Good Lord, Stalin was alive and if I broke a commandment I was in the same boat as he. Before this, in the first grade, I slugged along not worrying about stealing or bearing false witness. I hadn't yet learned how to really swear. The word butt was in my vocabulary and that's about it. For all I know I might have picked my nose and ate it. As for adultery that had to have something to do with big people, right? I mean at the age of six I thought moms and dads created babies by holding hands or, yuck, by kissing.
I've always thought The Ten Commandments were bad and the nuns furthered the problem because it forced us Catholics to go on a massive guilt. Wouldn't it have been better if God had had Moses write 'Even though bearing false witness is fun and satisfying try something else'. Instead, it's don't do this or you're going to Hell forever and a day-------with unbearable fire and burning and the devil prodding you with his pitchfork where it really hurts.
As soon as we memorized The Commandments I knew I was in big trouble. After all, I had recently stolen a nickel from my grandma's special container. In doing so I had to weigh the severity of the theft; baseball cards or no baseball cards? The baseball cards won out.
Personally, I've never understood stealing and why people do it especially when they have the means. Maybe greed has something to do with it. The same goes for vandalism. I mean, what's the point of being a criminal who gets nothing for their work if it remains a secret?
The reason I bring this up is because there's been quite a bit of wind lately about thievery in San Francisco, especially at Walgreen's and CVS stores. It seems, even though there are security, people still walk in with their garbage bags and take whatever they want. In the process nineteen of these stores have been forced to shut down. Since they provide a pharmacy it seems to me there are going to be a whole lot of old folks who are going to have to hop a bus and get downtown. Do the crooks ever consider this? Do they really care? But, I guess it's hard to care when you're strung out on drugs.
So, why isn't anything being done about this? Well, it's because California passed a law saying any stealing of items under $950.00 will be deemed a misdemeanor which means, why arrest these criminals when they won't have to serve any time?
I'd bet there are some good and decent people in California. I'd wager there are quite a few who aren't. If you take a walk down a San Fran street what most assuredly stands out are the numbers of syringes and feces on the sidewalks.
If you do go don't forget to wear your galoshes. Don't go into a Walgreen's and whatever you do keep your money at home.
