I've been recalling the flu pandemic of '68-'69. It first hit me on a Monday morning of Dec. 16. It was my first year of teaching/coaching. The principal sent me home. I fell into bed and the next I remember is asking my roommate what day it was. He said it was Wednesday. I passed out again and woke on Friday(and probably went to a bar in Cedar Falls). And why didn't I die you might wonder? I was young, healthy and viral.
In the period of the Hong Kong flu 100,000 Americans died. I contend it wasn't a big deal to the media because the Vietnam War was going on and their agenda better fit the narrative of America bad.
Today, it hit me. The population of the United States in 1968 was 205 million as opposed to the 325 million of today. At that time we did not have an influx of foreign immigrants from Asia, the subcontinent of India and Mexico coming here to work and attend out schools and obtain employment in high tech jobs.
