"Hey, Let's Get Drunk"

Back in my beer drinking day it didn't take too much arm twisting for me to slog down a brew. I wasn't one of those guys who poured a brew over my Wheaties but there were some times when 2 o'clock came it was Miller Time.

In 1978 I began the fall of the year coaching football at Rock Island Alleman High School. The head coach initiated the idea of holding practices at 8 am until 10 then gave the boys an hour break before we began again and finished the day no later than 1 pm. Of course, we had to come up with our practice plans for the next day and what better place to do it than at Lee's Liquor Store & Bar located a half block away. Ahh, those were the days. Besides, after four or five of yellow foam and fermented water we could draw up every trick play ever made to become state champs.

Today is Cinco de Mayo so the bars will be running full capacity. It's always 5 o'clock someplace, right?

There's something unique about this Mexican holiday. Are you ready? Only in the United States do we have it? Not in El Salvador, Panama, either. As a matter of fact if you went to Mexico and yelled out, 'Let's party' the natives would ask, "Why?" Cinco de Mayo is only in this country. Anything to make a buck and any excuse to drink is the American way.
