Always Knew Dublin Ohio Was An OK Place

Yeah, we live in a 2300 sq ft condo in the land of the rich and famous. Dublin has had two murders in the past twenty years and one of these was a babe who was jilted by her married boyfriend. It's the home of Wendy's International and gained it's claim to fame when Jack Nicklaus and three others(one of whom was a buddy of mine) built Muirfield Village golf club, where the Memorial Golf Tournament is held each year.

Believe it or not I was once offered an invitation to join the club. It came from my neighbor, one of the men who ponied up the cash for the course, Robert Hoag. I was at his condo next door when he asked me about a membership. Then he continued on, "Now, it's only $120,000 initiation fee and dues are only $8,000 a month and you might get back 80% of that if you leave."

Folks, I was the son of a mom who was a nurse and a dad who was a brakeman on the railroad. In addition, I was a high school teacher and coach for twenty years. In my educational career it would have taken me 10 years to come up with that kind of cash and family would have starved. I really needed an out on this so I cunningly said, "I'll have to ask The Queen." Always trust a man who can think on his feet.

Dublin was selected the best small town in Ohio(do you think a donation from our Chamber of Commerce might have been involved) and number 10 in the United States. I've been to a couple of these places; Carmel and Zionsville( a fab golf course called The Purgatory) and Lexington. I concur with the selections.

  1. Sammamish, Wash.
  2. Carmel, Ind.
  3. Brentwood, Tenn.
  4. Lexington, Mass.
  5. Reading, Mass.
  6. Zionsville, Ind.
  7. Portland, Maine
  8. Milton, Mass.
  9. Melrose, Mass.
  10. Dublin, Ohio
In all honesty there are two other communities I've visited that easily could have made the list. The first is Cedarburg, Wisconsin. It's located about 40 miles north of Milwaukee and is a gem. The second is in the northwest corner of Illinois and you'll fall in love with Galena. Do yourself a favor and check out some photos. If you're a golfer there are a couple first class courses. One is The General in reference to one of its most famous residents, Ulysseus Grant. You can thank me later with a check in the mail.
