Most of you who look at this photo will say, "That's the way it was in the 1890's." You'd be incorrect. As a young kid in the 50's Boone, Iowa had a Smitty shop. It was located a half block west of Story Street on 11th. I used to stop in and watch the maestro do his work on my way home from Sacred Heart School.
I don't remember the man who owned the place but he must have been nice and probably gave me a candy bar and bottle of pop. It didn't take much to intrigue a fat little kid on those days.
