Why Not Eat A Jayhawk

It's the same old same old but this time in Lawrence, Kansas. I wasn't going to write about what's happening down there but I will.

One hundred faculty members have signed a petition to keep Chick-fil-A off campus. According to the leader of the protest, a staff member who teaches gender studies, stated that the presence of these chicken sandwiches on campus is forcing the school to provide safe places for the students. Many students agree.

The result of the boycott will be as it usually is. The average John Q. Public person will overwhelm the fast food chain with orders for their tasty offering.

So, since I live in the past I tried to compare my experiences with what's going on today on college campuses. My brain is sort of fuzzy on this subject. it's been over 50 years since I searched out the college bar scene but I'll give it a try.

I attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. We had 3,000 students. Most of them came from the rich communities along the north shore of Chicago; places like Wilmette, Skokie, Evanston, etc.

I think the men had one Dean, Dr. Reinecke. I only saw him once and that's when he accused me of sneaking into the cafeteria to steal food. I denied it but he was right. End of story.

Anyway, I looked at the faculty list at the U. of Kansas. Women's studies dominate. Diversity courses are rampant. Sociology studies? Of course. It's no wonder the graduates in these courses can't find a decent job. Then what do these people do? They continue on in school to get a Masters in the benefits of bedbugs on society or some such nonsense course of study.

I'm amazed a protest group hasn't gone after the Kansas mascot, a Jayhawk, whatever that is. It looks like a bird but, then again, Iowa Stat's mascot is a bird but their team nickname is the Cyclones. Go figure.

I was trying to think what cause I'd be involved with if I were in school today. I'm not sure but I suspect it'd have something to do with beer, girls and parties.
