One of my great regrets in life is I never followed through on my plan to master Spencerian script. Lord knows I bought all the tools and even took a class but most of my materials are where I have put a thousand other things--in a drawer.
Old age and shaky hands don't bode well for what I'd enjoy doing. I always figured it was my feminine side.
Many years ago, in 1978 to be exact, I'd just taken a teaching job at Rock Island Alleman high school. It was my first day on the job and I was in the attendance room filling out forms. This room happened to be adjacent to the principal's office.
Regardless, as I was writing one of the liberal female faculty members was standing next to me and as she was looking over my shoulder she said, "You have beautiful penmanship----for a man." Without missing a beat I said, "You should know our principal said the exact same thing and since he thought this would have a positive influence on my students he was going to increase my salary by $500.00." It had been a long time since I'd heard a woman scream that way.
The principal walked out of his office laughing and then the babe realized it was a joke. I love it when a plan comes together.
