Most all the readers on this blog know that we adopted a messed up, nervous, scared, rescue pooch out of Kentucky last May. The poor lil' lass would've hung herself with a leash had we let her. Only the ignorant wouldn't know a dog is unhappy and doesn't want to live when they sleep constantly and when they go for a walk their eyes never leave the ground. That about described our CeeCee.
Times, however, have changed for the better. Last week while walking in the park behind our home she actually sniffed the rear ends of two pooches. She let a stranger approach her to pet the top of her head even though that can be somewhat dangerous for friend and foe alike.
CeeCee has completed her 8 lesson dog training class and if she were to receive a grade it'd be a B-. That's pretty good considering I had her pegged for a D+.
Today, at noontime I felt better than good about taking her to a local dog park to see how she's socially progressed. As it turned out it was a less than good idea. As soon as we entered the grounds two Lassie sized dogs approached her. She immediately went into the 'keep them the hell away from me' mode. And when the pooches didn't leave she literally, out of fear, climbed a five foot high fence to escape. Fortunately, I was able to grab her and we made a quick adios to the confines of my car.
When we got back home, at lunch time, I went to the kitchen, pulled a block of cheese out of the fridge along crackers from the container. I reached into the knife drawer and pulled out a blade 7" in length and 1" in width. CeeCee took a look at the knife, while my arm was raised, and cowered in fear the way I do when Her Majesty gives me the glare. I began to wonder: did something happen to her in an earlier life having to do with a knife or was it that I raised my hand in the air as in, maybe someone raised a hand and hit her? If CeeCee were a guy dog I could understand the angst; neutering and all that stuff. But, a female dog and a knife didn't make sense. In order to test her I, for a second time, raised the knife in the air and once again she ran in circles with the look given by the most scared doggie ever. I'm imagining bad things happened to my little girl so I gave it a few seconds before I came up with the answer to calm her down. Folks, treats are perfect for any situation and I gave her a bunch. However, this fear thing with the knife has me perplexed so if you have any thoughts feel free to leave a comment.
