(1)A case of malaria has been confirmed in Arkansas and is the first locally acquired case in the state in at least 40 years.
The patient, who was not named, lives in Saline County and had not recently traveled out of the country.
The case makes Arkansas the fourth state to report a locally acquired case of the disease this year, in another sign the disease may be gaining a foothold in the US for the first time in two decades.
(2)New York City is recording a 'dramatic' rise in tuberculosis cases, reports suggest — fueling fears the disease could resurge in the US. Preliminary data shows 500 cases of tuberculosis (TB) have been diagnosed in the city so far this year — marking a 20 percent increase from this time last year. Infections are also at their highest level in the city for this time of year in more than a decade, raising concerns the disease could spill into other areas of the country.
