Nile Kinnick is the Univ. of Iowa's only Heisman Trophy winner garnering that coveted statue in 1939. He grew up in small small town of Adel slightly west of Des Moines. In his teens he moved to Omaha and gradated from Benson high school but the lure of his home state brought him home.
Kinnick was they type of kid every parent wanted for a son and every other parent want to date their daughter.
He was only 5'8" in height but packed a wallop like no other. But, Kinnick's fame grew nationally due to his Heisman Trophy acceptance speech. It is considered the greatest one ever given. He spoke of country, of gratitude and he spoke of social justice. After he became a flyer and at the start of WWII he stated the number one problem to be addressed by this country was to face and solve the social problens and injustices shown toward our Black populaton. Sadly he died in a plane crash on a training mission.
The University of Iowa renamed their stadium after him. His statue is placed prominently in front of the entry way. Last night a group of thuggish trash defaced and vandalized his statue.
If our protesting friends want acceptance this is no way to go about it.
