Another college football season is drawing to a close and for me, being a fan of anything Iowa, is was a special season. The Iowa State Cyclones from the Big Twelve were preseason picked to win one game. Playing mostly with freshmen and sophomores the Cardinal % Gold won seven games.
On the eastern end of the state the Iowa Hawkeyes finished the season with a record of 10-2 with an offense that was mostly, well, offensive. But, as the former general manager of the Oakland Raiders Al Davis said, "Just win, baby." And win they did. I haven't officially checked out a statistic from the Hawks as to whether it's an all-time record but I don't see a reason why it isn't. The defense, and this is more than amazing, gave up a total of two rushing touchdowns the entire season. One of these was on a run of two yards and the other from one yard out. Read that again.
The Hawkeye offense might put you in a coma but watching their defense perform is a thrill only true fans can understand.
Iowa plays Michigan for the Big Ten title this upcoming Saturday. If they win I'll dance naked on Main Street in downtown Dublin, Ohio at noon the next day. That's another way of saying, "It ain't gonna happen" but it's fun to contemplate.
Two touchdowns in twelve games. Who da' thunk it could happen?
