Emma Lazarus Lives On

Immigration to the United States began in earnest in the 1880's. It's when my ancestors came to this country but they had to meet conditions. There are no conditions today. Emma Lazaus penned a poem about immigration way back when and it hangs on the Statue of Liberty.

"A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

The population of the United States today is approximately 335 million. Guess what? The number of foreign born in this once great nation is now 49.5 million. I really don't think this is what Lazarus had in mind unless we take the words 'wretched refuse' literally. The number is growing by the thousands every month. Pity this once great country. https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2023/11/30/foreign-born-population-hits-49-5-million-under-biden-largest-ever-american-history/
