I always thought we Catholics had it rough prior to the election of John F. Kennedy. If you hearken back to that period our protestant/atheist friends spread the rumor that if JFK was elected there was a tunnel dug under the Atlantic Ocean allowing the Pope to sneak into the country and assume the presidency.
Does this sound silly? Well, as a noted boob today would say, "Not a joke."
