Hope Springs Eternal

Today, across our nation, is what could be termed for a great part of the populace 'the first day of the rest of their lives'. This is because it is the official start to the college football season even though there were a smattering of games that took place the past two days.

If you have even noticed the title of this blog it's because I am a born and bred Iowan. In order to understand my love and loyalty for that land bordered by the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers when people ask where I'm from I tell them with this phrase: "How 'bout them Hawks' and I've lived in Ohio since 1989. I love my Hawkeyes but feel the same for Iowa State----------and Drake------and the Univ. of Northern Iowa-------and Coe College and every other school in God's country that fields an athletic team with one exception and that would be Grinnell College. Those guys are and always have been weirdos.

Therefore, in fifty minutes, Her Majesty and I will sashay on down to the home of our neighbor on the far end of Ten Mile Lake and take in the festivities of Iowa running roughshod over Utah State. There's a huge difference between my attitude on college sports teams from Iowa in 2023 as compared with, let's say, 1990. If one of my teams lose, unlike people who live in Ohio and root for the Buckeyes, I won't contemplate slitting my wrists or worse.

College sports has changed a great deal in the past few years. Kids can transfer from school to school depending on how much the booster clubs kick into a fund to buy them. When I was playing college baseball I remember how we beat Iowa in a doubleheader and our coach was so ecstatic he took us out for dinner in the Amana Colonies. That was our payment. The sad thing for me, though, was since it was on a Friday I had to suck down fish sticks while the heathen non-Catholics feasted on top sirloin steaks. My oh my, how times have changed.

So, enjoy your college games today and stay positive. If your team happens to lose or be horrible do not fear. There's always next year.
