Nearly a quarter of American households do not speak English as their first language, a new study published on Tuesday has found. The Migration Policy Institute discovered that 22 per cent of the US population prefers to speak another language at home, with the highest concentrations located in Nevada and Florida.

My German immigrant great grand parents would be mortified at this statistic. My grandfather always told me when he was in there home it was okay to speak their native tongue. When the kids left the house they were required to speak English or there would be heck to pay.
