The Know-Nothing Party Lives

I received the following from a high school classmate, Dr. Brilliant, who lives in North Carloina. I felt it was worth re-printing.

The “Know Nothing Party,” was an offshoot of the powerful democratic party in the mid 1850’s, formed as a buffer between the democrats and what was the newly forming anti -slavery republican party  . Claiming to be anti- slavery, (that was in the north, while the south was a bit lackluster on the anti-slavery issue), and being nationalist Protestants, they were also anti freedom of other religions, especially  when it came to Catholics. Being anti immigration, they placing white European ethnic groups into defined categories when considering immigration. They were considered progressives and wanted more government spending. Lincoln said the following in regards to the Know Nothing party, should they come into power. That all men are created equal would then read;  That all men are created equal accept for negroes and foreigners and Catholics. When it comes to this I should prefer emigration to some country where they make no pretense of loving liberty, to Russia for instance, where despotism can be taken pure and without the base alloy of hypocrisy. Todays offshoot of the democrat party ( the progressive wing), may, in fact, be a rebirth of the Know Nothings, but on steroids. Freedom of any Christian religious belief under the first amendment is often apposed in favor of secularism, atheism and sexually perverse voting blocks. African Americans are considered equal, but then only once every four years, when they are allowed off the urban government plantations to place their vote. Foreign immigration, most often illegal, is limited to those ethnic groups who, it is felt, might best support the political party. All such groups are then supported through massive progressive government spending programs which in turn amasses immense power in the hands of the party leadership. If Lincoln was alive today he would not have to migrate to 1856 Russia, he would already be living there. However, today things are truly different, for Lincoln most likely would not have been allowed the freedom of speech to post his 1850’s statement when speaking about the 21st century, “Know Nothings.”
