I've become a big fan of high school and college wrestling primarily through watching a young man, Spencer Lee, ply his trade at the University of Iowa. When wrestlers from opposing schools go against him it's considered a Phyrric victory for them if they can make it through the 1st period without getting pinned. Two years ago the young man won a national championship even though he had torn ligaments in both knees. He is a marvel.
Anyway, what I know about the nuances of wrestling is nil. The state of Iowa produces outstanding high school wrestlers. For example, the Iowa High School Championships will be completed by this evening.
Check this out:
Danarii Mickel of Ames high school is a freshman at the 3A level. This means he wrestles at a school with the highest enrollment and at 195 lbs just pulled off what should be considered the biggest upset that’s ever occurred right in the history of Iowa wrestling… He defeated senior and 2 time returning state champion, McCrae Hagarty of Waverly-Shell Rock in the semifinals and will battle with another freshman 195 lb'er, Dreshaun Ross of Fort Dodge in the finals…
This is literally unheard of… two freshmen in the finals vying to become a state wrestling champion.
