It's A Crazy World

I'm a person with simple needs and I enjoy the routine of life. Some people like roller coasters and others opt for merry-go-rounds. Most of the time I prefer the latter.

I've gotten into the habit of visiting the golf driving range at a minimum of seven days a week. It's only a ten minute drive down Muirfield Road to the Dublin Golf Club and I can then swat golf balls to my hearts content. I began going to the range last year when I found out I could whack away at the little white balls for $60 a month unlimited. It's an enjoyable experience because I can hit a bevy of shots with different clubs and also strike up conversations with a wide variety of folks. I take a lounge chair along with me for periodic rests. Hey, some people sit in a boat and fish. Some shoot basketballs. I hit golf balls.

I want you to concentrate on the logo at the top of the page because today I found out how the long arm of our bureaucracy stretches all the way from Tucson, Arizona to a farm community of 3,000 souls located ten miles west of Dublin, Ohio. The community is called Plain City. It is an idyllic one with little crime and populated with your normal rural folks who, for the most part, follow the rules and enjoy life to the fullest.

Hitting balls next to me this morning was a young man, a high school kid, from Jonathan Alder High School which is the name of that school system in Plain City. I happened to mention to the lad that his school logo was the exact same one as at my last teaching position in Illinois and that our school nickname's, Pioneers, were the same. It was then that he told me the logo was going to be changed. He gave me the reason why and I shook my head in utter disbelief.

The young man stated they had to change their school logo because-----------and to me this is so representative of how insane our country has become--------The University of Arizona filed suit because their logo was the same as Jonathan Alder's and since the U of A had been around first---well, you get the drift.

It seems that a trouble making company out of Atlanta found out about JA's logo and informed the brainiacs in Tucson about this dastardly crime and then the wheels of our legal system went into action. My response to this: "Dear God, strike me dead!"

It seems to me Arizona would like the free advertising; that it might inspired a few Plain City kids to matriculate in Arizona but what do I know? I'm only a physical education major.

We do, indeed, live in a crazy world!
