A couple of years ago I wrote about a fellow high school American History teacher of mine who told his students about the Roosevelt brothers. If you knew the guy you'd understand. He was more interested in coaching baseball than in reading about our nations history. When I politely corrected him on the subject, that Franklin D. and Teddy were cousins not brothers, his response was, "Well, I knew they were related in some way". Folks, they walk among us which is a good reason to talk with you children about what's going on in their classroom.
I happened to be watching NBC Nightly News on Wednesday(The Queen insists on this viewing). Anyway, one of their crack reporters was referring to Franklin Roosevelt and proceeded to pronounce his last name with the oo's has having a u sound. This is incorrect. FDR's name pronunciation had a long o sound. The u pronunciation was used by Teddy.
I believe it's important to be precise in this. After all, we're talking American icons. Also, when this distinction is uttered in front of others they'll think you're quite the intellectual marvel.
I'm only here to serve.
