'Hook 'Em Horns'. This Is Not A Sports Story
The University of Texas in Austin is the home of some very rabid football fans. Hell, the entire state of Texas is all about football. High schools have stadiums that seat 30,000. High schools have spring practice for gosh sake.
Look at their logo. Now take your index finger and your pinkie finger and close the middle fingers with the thumb holding them down. Every Saturday at Texas Stadium you will see 90,000 people with their hands in the air with the 'Hook 'em horns' sign. It's been this way since football began.
A month ago and snowflakes this is for you. Texas played West Virginia University. A wide receiver from WVU scored a TD and as he did he did the 'Hook 'em horns' sign but with his fingers pointed down. The officials immediately gave the kid an unsportsmanlike conduct 15 yard penalty. It happened again later in the game.
The officials didn't make up this rule. It came down from the Big 12 offices. Can you believe it?
Former Oklahoma football coach Barry Switzer said it perfectly, "If a guy gives you the finger give it back to him. Deal with it".
Well, I've been thinking about this stupidity. Let's say when Iowa State of the Big XII whose logo is the Cyclone plays their bowl game against most likely Mississippi State. During the contest a middle linebacker for the Mississippi State team starts spinning like a top; round and round. Will the officials flag that kid for unsportsmanlike conduct? Obviously, I'm off the wall on this but in 2018 with all the political correctness going on doesn't it seem ridiculous it has permeated college sports?
I say it's about time the 'Hook 'em horns' sign is eliminated. It's a sign of 'up yours' as opposed to those who put their fingers down telling us, 'no it isn't".
