The First Of May

Another May Day in the trash heap of history and it has zilch to do with the communist movement. Back in the day, when I was a kid, our mother's would make candy baskets for us and we, both boys and girls, would drop these love bunnies off at the doorsteps of our favorite male or female classmate.

The trick was for the recipient to catch and give the giver a kiss on the cheek. This tradition has gone the way of the Model T(Millennials, it was a car invented by Henry Ford). Time marches on and so does political correctness. I have no doubt if the May basket is still being passed out a school would require all students to receive on so as to not hurt anyone's feelings. Most likely, boys would be required to give one to boys. It's the 21st Century don't ya' know and this action destroys the purpose

Back in 1953 when we were seven my buddy, Steve Roeder, was the master of May Day. He'd hide completely out of site behind a fir tree next to is front porch. When the unsuspecting female dropped off her basket off goodies Steve would jump out of his hiding place and give the girl, Sandy Nickel was his favorite, a huge smooch. He was our hero.

Traditions for us old people die hard.
