Hilarity is in the eye of the beholder, or something like that. As you all well know we have a 'Gay President'. It's on the cover of every newspaper and magazine. I'd heard that Obama was gay. If you google 'gay' and 'obama' you'll find a reference to some lad in Chicago who was a friend of the President. He was murdered and the mother of said gay guy thinks it was because Obama didn't want to be outted.
Of course, you do know I'm playing with you. I always like to reference Thomas Nast in informing the American people about social issues. So, if you didn't know, Nast was an editorial cartoonist for the New York Times in the late 1800's. He is responsible for creating Santa Claus as we know him. Nast realized that there were thousands of immigrants in NYC who didn't read or speak the English language so his cartoons brought home the message for them concerning social issues. His cartoons exposed graft, corruption and other sorded aspects of life in the big city.
Tina Brown is the editor of Newsweek Magazine. She likes flashy covers to get the attention of the people. Last week's cover of a three year old sucking on his mother's breast is a prime example. Many of you reading this might not know that there are literally hundreds of thousands of people in the US who read at a 5th grade level or less. There are also millions of folks who can look at a magazine cover, read the headlines and see a picture and these semi-illiterates can be easily duped. I don't mean only those citizens in the back hills of West Virginia and Kentucky, either.
This picture might do more damage than good. Let's hope so..
