Today is a very significant day in the Catholic Church, It's the celebrating of the baptism of Jesus Christ. It also signifies the end of the Christmas season. It's a big deal in more ways than one.
The Church is decorated like Times Square on December 24. There were wreaths with red bulbs handing from all 24 pillars at St. Brigid's in Dublin, Ohio. Two large pines adorned the alter on each side. They, too had bulbs and red cardinals adorned the branches. The most important decorations were the poinsettia's on the alter, all two hundred of them.
Folks, what is about to happen at the end of Mass is akin to Sooner's crossing the Oklahoma border in 1889 to grab free land.
At the conclusion of the service at the last Mass the priest gets up and announces, "I guess you know what day this is", and the congregation, especially the little old women scream with glee.
After the priest leaves the Church there's a mad dash for the alter to get free poinsettia's. Octogenarians using walkers and canes head up front knocking over whatever is in their wake to garner a freebie. Some of them even had their husbands grab two or three of the flower boxes. I call them thieves but whatever.
I think it's more than humerus. It's one of those little life stories I find delectable.
