Q. When was the last gas refinery built in the United States?
A. Oddly enough, it was during the Carter Administration in 1976.
Am I old or what? In 1971 we were living in Storm Lake, Iowa; three hours northwest of Des Moines. I had a teaching job interview in Ottumwa, Iowa; two hours southeast of Des Moines. For you youngsters who have never heard of this, there was a 'gas war' going on in April of 1971. Filling stations lowered the price of fuel to get us to come in. I filled my tank for the Ottumwa trip and the price----19 cents per gallon. Those were the days.
