If You Enjoy Getting Sloshed Move To Wisconsin

I read an article regarding Wisconsin and drinking last evening. I was was amazed to the point I had to email five of my Badger acquaintances to find out if it, the story, could be true. All verified in the affirmative. Still, it's mindboggling so here goes but a few moments let's jump to Ohio and a 1st offense DUI to see the penalties.

Penalties for a first OVI conviction in Ohio vary by degree of intoxication. For a “low level” OVI (BAC of less than .17%) you can be sentenced to:
  • a minimum three days in jail or mandatory attendance at a three-day Drivers Intervention Program
  • up to 5 years of probation
  • a fine from $375 to $1,075 and related fees (get a better idea of how much a first DUI will cost you), and
  • a court-imposed license suspension of one to three years.
Oh, and don't forget the cost of a lawyer.

Helllooooooo Wisconsin-----A first offense DUI in Wisconsin will buy you a ticket only and imposed by a judge. That's it. The story gets better. Legislators in Madison are considering making a first DUI a misdemeanor only. Wow!
In the event you don't know Wisconsin is unique when it comes to liquor and beer. A picture of a beer mug filled to the brim with a favorite brew should be on the state flag. Wisconsin itself is known for beer, brats,  a Friday night fish fry and brandy. Did you know, and this is another of those Ripley's Believe It Or Not stories, The State of Wisconsin consumes more brandy than the other 49 states COMBINED.

I wondered how the easy penalties came about and politics was the obvious answer. The very most important organization in the State is the Wisconsin Tavern League. The League's lobbyist buy off the politicians and you now know the rest of the story.
If anyone you like to drink and consume tremendous amounts of alcohol my suggestion is you think about relocation to the land where beer production began in this great nation.
