Don McLean wrote the song, American Pie in 1971 as a tribute to Buddy Holly. You remember the day the music died, right?
McLean was recently interviewed and said music is gone. It's not on the radio. There's some form of music but it's all forgettable. He went on to state, there was a TV show back in the Fifties titled, Name That Tune' and by the fourth note a contestant would come up with a song like 'Strangers In The Night'.
Today there's nothing on the radio you can name in twenty notes, he stated. And he's right.
